Objectives

Because of their exaggerated workload, server software typically accommodates multiple Central Processing Units (CPUs) as a load balancing and fault tolerance strategy. Although rare, from time to time CPUs (processors) need to be replaced.

Before that time arrives, it is best to understand processors, how they work, and which ones best suit the needs of a server and the network it supports.

Upon completion of this chapter, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how a CPU works
  2. List and define the components of a CPU
  3. Compare and contrast Intel and AMD processors
  4. Define elements of a server processor subsystem
  5. Explain how to install/upgrade a CPU using best practice
  6. Explain how to configure a motherboard
