Selecting a Surge Protector

page: 16 of 22

Just like power supplies, surge protectors are tested and certified by testing facilities. When comparing different surge protectors, it is important to look for the Underwriters Laboratories listing of "UL 1449." It is not advisable to purchase a surge protector that does not meet this UL standard.

Other indications of a surge protector's quality are the joule and surge-amp ratings. Joules, like amps, are a way of measuring energy. A good rule of thumb is the higher the joule rating, the better the unit. A 1000 or higher joule rating indicates that the product is of good quality. Some surge suppressors even provide insurance warranties for attached equipment.
